My godfather’s name is Carl. He was chosen to be my godfather long before I was born. My mother chose him because he is like a brother to her. His parents are my mom’s godparents too. So, it sorts of carries on a family tradition. One generation tied to another.
Carl showed an interest in science from an early age, frequently attending school science camps. He was always taking notes, and he discovered he had an aptitude for research.
He went to South Miami Senior High. After that, he attended Columbia University with a full scholarship, and then he went to medical school at the University of Miami. He graduated n 2001 and opened a private practice in Miami.
As a teenager, he worked in different places. He would always save part of his money to donate it to Camillus House, a homeless shelter. While volunteering there, he met a volunteer physician, and his love for science grew.
His favorite holiday is Christmas. We have wonderful memories together with the entire family. He met a woman eight years ago, and they got married in the Bahamas. She is a criminal attorney and works in downtown Miami. They have two children, ages seven and three.
He has always been a kind and giving person. He has driven 6 hours to help me move and has taken time off work to be present at a variety of school events. He is active in the community, assisting different social organizations with his time. He travels for two weeks every year to provide free medical care to deserving families in the Dominican Republic.
Carl lives in the Miami Beach area. Whenever I visit, we have a great time and many laughs. He also gives advice freely and has been a great role model. When I’m in Miami, we take boat trips around the city. Carl loves fishing and enjoys taking the family out on the boat. He’s also an avid golfer.
He never forgets how he was afraid to go into the lake behind his house because of its strong current. When Spark, his dog, was playing in the water one day, an alligator came swimming up behind it. Without thinking twice, he jumped into the water and pulled his dog to safety. He stills wonders how he ever managed to pull it off. He claims to have completely shed his fear at that exact moment.
Carl is a frequent motivational speaker at local high schools. He is currently the Director of Clinical Cancer at Mount Sinai.
